For the past few days, I haven’t been able to get much sleep because I wake up wheezing and gasping for air. It feels like my air passage has closed, and it normally takes an hour or so to get my breathing pattern back to normal. During the day, I don’t have any difficulties and I don’t appear to be ill. I’ve looked up sleep apnea, but I don’t have the symptoms… I don’t suffer from heartburn (well I have random chest pains, but never after eating), sore throat or nausea so I don’t think it’s gastroesophageal reflux (GER), although it does seem like it happens when I’m lying down. I’ve tried the Vicks rub but it doesn’t have any effect. I haven’t done anything odd recently, rather than watch Avatar the night before the symptoms started. Was the movie so good that it left me a breathless insomniac (haha joking) or could it still possibly be GER or is it something else? What can I do to stop it?

He has severe sleep apnea and uses a c pap machine nightly when he is home. I was wondering if once someone begins using one, will their body become dependent on it making the apnea worse when they are not using it? I’m asking because my dad travels back and forth to china every month and has admitted he does not use it on the plane! He also dozes off while watching tv and obviously doesn’t wear it then. I just worry about him.

I am reading up on sleep apnea and would like to hear some advice on what may be the best cpap macines on the market?

So I have been having some problems sleeping and the problem is I can’t find anything that fits my symptoms.

It’s like I have a combination of a couple of things, I have a lot of problems getting to sleep and usually spend hours lying in bed sometimes I just give up but then when I do get to sleep I will often sleep near twenty hours straight.

I am not depressed at all, I am overweight but do not suffer from sleep apnea and at this moment am not diabetic. Can anyone take any guesses?

I have no clue, but it’s possible. Here’s a list of things people think I have.
-type 1 diabetes
-A.D.D
-sleep apnea

And now here are some symptoms others and myself have noticed I have.
-stress
-bad mood
-urinating frequently
-increased thirst (drinking lots of water lately)
-I’m always tired now
-I have bad memory during the day
-I sometimes wake up with sore throats
-every once in a while I get this like sour/sweet breath
-Some days I get really hungry, some days I barely eat anything
-I’ve been getting a lot of headaches lately ( I rarely got them before and no it’s not because theres been more noise)
-I have pretty bad anxiety
-I can rarely focus for a long time
-I always give up on things if I don’t them right the first time even though I know I should give up
-I get really frustrated when I try to do home work/school work or a lot of things
-I’m almost always worrying or nervous about something

Shall I go on?
I don’t know I think i’m just being a hypochondriac. What do you think?
In case this helps I just turned 15.

Thanks you for all the serious answers I got.

My husband has recently developed some sleep problems. He snores so loud I think the neighbors can hear him(no kidding). He wakes up every 1-2 hours and has trouble falling back asleep. He never feels rested. He has strange, vivid dreams that he actually acts out sometimes. He’s been tested for sleep apnea, but that doesn’t seem to be the problem. Any ideas as to what this could be? Thanks in advance!

My husband is 27 years old and always tired. Here’s alittle background info:
He has sleep apnea, he is on Paxil 40mg daily for anxiety, he is also on 40mg of Priolsec daily. He uses his sleep apnea machine on and off and if he does use it normally its only for a few hours. My husband works from 5pm-10 pm, then goes to his second job from 10.30pm-3.30am. He gets in bed around 4/4.30am every day. He wakes up at 11.30am.,so about 7 hours of sleep. Heres the problem, he’s constantly tired and falling asleep, especially while watching TV on the couch. This past Sunday he slept through the night (his day off), woke up at 6.30 am with our 10 month old, and went back to bed at 9am until noon, then woke up. Then later that night he went to bed a 6 pm and I woke him up at 10pm to go to his night job. Is his schedule making any sense? :) It drives me CRAZY that he is always so tired. WHat do you think is causing this? He doesnt help around the house very much so thats no causing excessive tiredness… help!:)

I’ve been using a cpap machine for mild sleep apnea. It is turned up to 11, now I ask I thought the machine is supposed to help you sleep better so when you wake up you feel refreshed. Well, I still feel tried and not to energized. They did the tritation and said I was good at 10 so anyone know what I should do now?

Last night I took a sleep study, and the doctor called me back and said I have mild sleep apnea, and he was more concerned with my low oxygen levels, so he is going to do a test from my home when I sleep to check my oxygen with a cpap machine while I sleep. He asked if I have lung or heart problems, and I don’t know if I do. Do you think my family practitioner will check into these areas? and what is wrong with low oxygen levels? I do have high blood pressure, usually 138/90. I am overweight also. He told me if I lose 20 to 25 lbs my sleep apnea would go away, but does that mean my low oxy levels will go away? I’m a little scared because I do find it hard to breathe at times. I can’t lay down straight because my breasts seem to weigh down on my heart. Also, does insurance let you keep the cpap machine or do you have to give it back after more tests? Just curious. When they let me try it on last night on my sleep study, i felt such relief because I could breathe so much better with it on. I am also being checked for diabetes, thyroid problems. When I had the things on my neck and head last night for sleep study it like made my neck hurt bad, is this normal? Someone give me some insight.
Also would low oxygen levels have anything to do with my thyroid?

My brother is a heroin addict and I knew long before my mom did that he had this problem, considering we are so close in age and have a lot of the same friends. I would try to tell her and it would just cause fights because she didn’t believe me claiming that she talked to him and their communication was good.
So my family has gone threw a lot in the past four years( like my mom and dad’s divorce and my mom loosing her job to get a worse paying one) and it has taken its tole on my mom and she has been really stressed and down. She was doing alright for a while but she went on medical leave claiming she had a sleeping problem like sleep apnea. When she went back to work my brother, who moved out about when she took her leave, admitted to having his addiction. I felt hurt and angry that she didn’t believe me but glad he was getting help.
Shortly after he came out about this she started acting weird and falling asleep a lot while she was driving and doing normal everyday stuff. I know this story is going to get a lot weirder and harder to believe but bare with me.
I started noticing these changes in her and she would stop by my brother’s house everyday after work to "check" on him and see how his treatment was going. I do believe she was checking on him for a few weeks but she started showing signs of using heroin the more I looked into her actions.
She was really lethargic and it scared me and I kept it to myself for a while and only told my boyfriend about my suspicions. I know the signs of what a person looks, acts and talks like when they are high on heroin because of the experience with my brother.
One day my mom brother and I went out to eat and when we were getting in the car, I was on the phone with my bf but slightly listening to my mom and bro (because she went on another one of her suspicious bathroom trips that she does so often) and I swore she said she was worried she dropped a balloon( meaning a balloon of heroin) and my brother even glanced at me as if to see if I heard her. So i confronted my mom later and she flipped out about how hurt she was by my accusation and at that point I thot I was making it up in my head. I later talked to them both about it and the deny it like anyone would. Now mind you people who are on drugs are very good lyers and are good at telling people everything is fine when its not. I have gone through my moms phone before and seen texts asking my brother for the usual dose and hit and other stuff like that and my brother saying he would need money and stuff. My mom has bad track marks also, which was what made me think all of this to begin with.
So I know it is not in my head and I know that she is using now and I am sad and hurt and angry and confused on why and I try to talk to her about it but she denies it and it does more damage than good at this point. So getting to the point, we recently got alot of money because my recently deceased grandmothers house sold and alot of the money is in her name. Not only am I worried about her health but she has been slacking off on work and is on her was to being fired. I still live with her and I am only 18 and still have high school to finish and I am really scared to stay living with her and watch her life be ruined but I have no job and my dad is outta the picture and I only have a few thousand dollars. I feel bad but I hate her so much right now for her decisions that I can hardly talk to her when she is obviously high and trying to hide it, Which is alot. I dont know what to do… I cant turn her in to the police i dont want to hurt her but I need her to know that I know what she is doing and I am not going to put up with it, BUT i cant really move out yet because I need to finish school… and I am so over whelmed by this situation its hard to even get up for school and I am really worried. I am already diagnosed with Panic Disorder so it puts more stress on me… i really need advise… please anyone… you could change my life by replying to this… sorry about the typing and spelling…
mmk well my bf is in the middle of being kicked outta his moms house, he is only 19 and he just got a job, he is probably going to live with his friend and i doubt i could live with them…

And the other dilemma is i don’t have my drivers license(but i have a car) and if i move out of my moms house and live on my own it will probably make me drop out of school and i wont graduate, because i live in such a rural town that there is no work and i need to move to the city… its just all so messed up.. its really hard to feel alone in life…
Wow ok so all the responses are great thanks everyone, but just for the record.. i have no friends or social life because of my panic disorder and the so called friends that i do have are distant and wouldnt know how to help me because they have freakishly perfect lives.. i have no trusted adult to talk to at all… all i can think of is to get a job and move out… even if that means putting off my high school diploma for a year or two to get settled… which sucks because i really enjoy learning and school… ps i dont want pity, just advise and someone to listen really… thank you all though…very much..

Over the past few years I’ve had my fair share of memory problems. Nothing too severe, just slight forgetfulness, and it really never impacted my life. Well, the last few months, I’ve been having severe forgetfulness. I forget names of friends and family members, how to spell simple words without using spell check, songs I used to play from memory on the piano, I forget appointments, simple daily tasks, and things people just shouldn’t be forgetting at my age. In addition to this, I have periodic dizzy spells, every day I have a headache of some form. Some days it’s nauseating migraine headache, and others just a slight pulsing pain. I’m also always feeling tired, I often get over 10 hours of sleep and it does help me, but I don’t always feel rejuvenated.

There are a few things that I suspect could be causing this. The #1 is my weight. Granted I don’t consider myself to be obese, I’m 5’8" and 253 pounds, but was over 275 in the summer, and am continuing to slowly lose weight, yet with the weight loss the symptoms have not subsided.
I’ve also suspected sleep apnea, I believe I have a deviated septum, as I simply cannot breathe through my nose, and I’ve awaken many times during the night because I closed my mouth and could not breathe.

I know I should definitely see a doctor, but I want to have all of my needed information before I go, as I cannot afford to go. If anyone has some advice or helpful tips, I would appreciate it. Just let me know if you need more info. Thanks for your help.
Just realized I didn’t post my age or gender. 23year old male.

I had a heart cath done and they wouldnt give me anything because of my sleep apnea, and that is just a mild sedation,My question is I need neck surgery a major surgery, whats that going to do with my sleep apnea?I have severe sleep apnea and i am also a diabetic.Doesnt look to good uh?

Ive been with my bf for 4yrs and he has sleep apnea and right side heart failure when we first go together he was a chunky guy now he weighs 400lbs and it is making his sleep apnea and heart failure worse.he has a machine that he is supposed to sleep on every night but he does not and so he sleeps 18 to 20 hrs a day.Which doesn’t leave much room for anything else for him to do i work 3rd shift and he is home all day with the kids but when i get off of work i still have to clean up wash dishes and take care of the kids because he sleeps all day.And as for a sex life we don’t have one maybe once every two weeks we have sex because he is to tired.I don’t know what to do because i do love him but he want sleep on his machine or do anything that he is supposed to do for his heart failure i don’t want to leave him but i don’t want to wake up and find him dead or god forbid im at work and one of my kids finds him dead.I try to get him to walk with me because i am a bit overweight but i have been on diet now for 4months and when ever i ask him to walk with me he says no and that is one of the things his doctor wants him to do for his heart. He doesn’t even want to get up to do simple things he always calls the kids or me to do it HELP ME…WHAT SHOULD I DO?…sorry its so lng.

I was online and my dad did not sign out of his email account..I know it was wrong but I looked at his email and found emails he has written to a woman!! He wrote things like he and my mom have not had sex in ten years and he will not divorce her because there is to much money involved and my brother has a learning disability (he is 32 yrs old) it would break his heart….he wrote things in his emails about his love for this woman how much he loves her ect.. I felt sick to my stomach after reading them and wish i haven’t..I know my parents have had problems they sleep in separate bedrooms..my mom is always nagging him about money..I always though they slept in separate bedrooms because of his sleep apnea machine (my mom complains about the noise) but according to his email its that way because they just don’t sleep togther anymore–I don’t know how I am gonna look at my father after reading all this..

Recently diagnosed with mild sleep apnea. I woke up 113 times. A CPAP was recommended.

The lack of sleep has had left me depressed, fatigued constantly, severe body aches at times, irritable and have gained 35 pounds.

My question is whether anyone was in a similar situation with the mild apnea and the troublesome symptoms, and whether CPAP helped you.

I will have to pay several hundred dollars out of pocket, and wonder, given the diagnosis of "mild", is it worth the financial investment?
my 0xygen dropped to 93, which is good, I think. I am not sure how long…I don’t recall that info in the study and I don’t have it at hand.

Tell me what you would do or if you have had a similar experience. My baby has constantly been sick since Nov. with 2 bouts of RSV and continuous respiratory infections. He also has had a terrible wet cough nonstop. I’ve been to doctor after doctor. One doctor gave us a nebulizer, Singulair and suggested he had asthma or allergies but insisted the sicknesses were all viral and prescribed no antibiotic. I asked the the emergency room doctor (when he had RSV) why he was constantly getting sick and about his cough and he said he was just there to stabilize treatment and that I could drive 3 hours to the next town to consult an allergy specialist. He also called a few days later to say that the xray could POSSIBLY suggest pneumonia but couldn’t be sure and still no antibiotics. I went to another doctor and he said it was all viral respiratory infections because my son goes to daycare and that I"ll be thankful he’s building his immunity now. (I paid 0 for that great advice) Finally I just knew I had to keep trying and the doctor I went to today immediately said he had a sinus infection and prescribed antibiotics and is referring me to an ear, throat, and nose specialist to be evaulated for sleep apnea or infected tonsils since he hasn’t been wanting to eat. It makes me so angry at the other doctors for causing my son to suffer so long. They just seemed to shrug their shoulders and say there was nothing they could do. I even found on the internet that all his symptoms matched sinusitus and bronchitis but these doctors are such idiots they couldn’t figure it out! They just chalked it up to daycare and allergies. So I think when we go to this specialist I will have them fax all his results to these idiots so maybe they can learn from their mistakes. Is there some rule now that doctors don’t prescribe antibiotics anymore?! Just listening to me son breathe I could hear the rattle in his chest and his swollen sinuses. They just acted like oh well, he’s playing so he’s fine. What else is he supposed to do, be on his deathbed in order to get help? He’s just making the best of it even though he has been feeling very badly.

I have had mood swings (not to serious) difficulty consentrating, insomnia at night, restless sleeping, really tired during the day, surges of energy every now and again what could this be I have looked up sleep apnea but not many of the symptoms apply I have ahd this for over a year on and off and never told my mom because it wasn’t to serious I am almost 13 if that matter and I have my period ( this was going on before I started my period) Sorry for the guys u should be used to that kind of talk by now!
Thanks I would like some websites to but if u can’t just telling me what u think it just as good ")
OH and temperary depression I usually eat my way out of depression also

My dad’s just been diagnosed with sleep apnea and after having tiredness problems for years and being fobbed off by drs’ for years, I want to get tested for sleep apnea too. But I’m anxious the dr will say no, just diet and exercise and you should be fine…Like the one older dr said last time, when my usual dr wasn’t available. But I’m tired most of the time I can’t be bothered. I get in from work, wash my work clothes, eat a microwave meal, then go to bed. Just recently my sleep’s gotten worse. I’ll get in and with no work the next day, I’ll have dinner then sleep from 7.30 to 6am! No break in between. Most tests I’ve had I had to ask for, iron test, diabetes test, all fine. So any tips for asking my doctor?
In Australia we don’t have insurance, but I am on concession so I just pay a small fee.

Hi. I’m a 16 year old male. Im around 6’1 and weigh around 220 lbs. Recently I came across a video that shows you how to go into sleep paralysis or something like that..where you basically let your body fall asleep while your mind is awake. He briefly stated that this is a way to find out if you have sleep apnea.
So I tried the method he suggested and what I noticed is was when I was in this state..I would stop breathing (which is what he described sleep apnea to be) and not notice for around 5 seconds in which I would realize that I wasn’t breathing.

I wasn’t sure if I was just making stuff up in my mind so I looked further into sleep apnea. After reading the symptons it really started to get me thinking that i might suffer sleep apnea..
Im always tired in the day. Even if I go to bed at around 10 PM and wake up at 6AM (8 hrs rest..that seems good) i feel pretty tired..usualy throughout the whole day. Also I read that it occurs more to overweight people (I am some overweight, not obese though).
the website which i got the information from was http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Diseases/SleepApnea/SleepApnea_WhatIs.html

Do you think it is possible for me to have sleep apnea? alot of these symptoms sound similar to mine..yet i don’t think i snore too much (which seems to be a big one)

Ok I know kids throw fit all the time i know this but my sons being this way since he was born….when he was a baby he could be either sleeping or awake and be content and calm and outta no where scream his head off throw up his hands and kick his feet. Now he is older (2 years old) we could be playing, watching a movie, out at the park, talking, having a good time he coulkd be giggling or having a wonderful time out no where he stops what he is doing whips whatevers in his hand (if anything is in his hand) and throws him self on the floor kicking and screaming for no reason….no he does have some problems he wears glasses cos he cant see without em, has a weak heart, sleep apnea, asthma..he walks he rarely talks to..but this all of a sudden bizarre behaviour has people concerened the doctors say they dont know and further treatment is neccesary…..does any one know why he does this??
maybe he has a type of syndrome or disease idk please help!!!

PLEASE NO RUDE, INAPPROPRIATE REMARKS

he removed buckle 7 days back because retina was firmly attached and by gods grace my vision is very good, now can i use c-pap machine i am suffering from sleep apnea and i was using this machine to sleep it regulates breathing.can this machine disturb my retina, because of its air pressure pl reply.

For sleep apnea. I gotta use one, keeps me from snoring. I didn’t realize that I had a severe case of sleep apnea until I took a sleep test.
Its kinda weird at first, but you get used to it after a while, it seems to help me sleep better. And that’s sticking pretty close to science fact.
(no more space aliens, I promise. Well, for a while, anyway) Although sleep apnea can cause some strange feelings and beliefs during one of those periods when breathing has stopped.

Roeder…called the conditions of his incarceration "deplorable." His cell was so cold, he said, that he "started having a bad cough. I thought I was going to have pneumonia." Roeder also said he’d been denied phone privileges and needed his sleep apnea machine.

Sleep apnea is not a psycholigical disease its a repiratory disease. It can cause insulin resistance without obesity.
