OK, I already posted this in the toddler section, but I seem to get more responses here in newborn and baby, and lots of you have more than one child, so here goes…We have noticed my son has snored heavily since about 12 months, he is now 15 months. Sometimes he also coughs in his sleep. He sleeps a lot, like kid his age should, but he is generally a really happy kid and plays pretty hard so he doesn’t seem to be hurting for sleep. However, I have noticed lately he wakes up still seeming pretty tired for a 1/2 hour or so, and he frequently wakes briefly in the wee hours of the night, bawls for a minute and is back to sleep before I can check on him.
Oh, yeah he is prone to colds and allergies, had to have tubes at 7 months, he had awful recurring ear infections, he almost always has a runny nose-our pediatricians still disagree whether its allergies, some blame it all on daycare, but he has had a runny nose almost from day one. I suffer from allergies and we live in an area known for allergens.
He turned 15 months on March 27, and has 16 teeth, so if teething make your nose run, maybe thats a factor? I know there’s disagreement on that one, too. Oh, and he is tiny weight wise, average height but below the chart for weight, so its not a weight issue.
Sorry this is so long, just wondering if anyone had an experience with nsoring or sleep apnea in their little ones, what were the symptoms, outcomes, etc
He has his 15 month checkup in 11 days, so I am planning on addressing it with his pediatrician.
Thanks.
The tubes cleared up his ear infections, thankfully, but yes, he seems to have perpetual colds, even though he was breastfed the first year.
He doesn’t wake every night, but at least maybe 2X/week.

Thanks guys.
Since he already has an ENT for his ears, I went ahead and got an appointment for him tommorow with the specialist-I figured the doctor would just refer him so I’d skip the middle man!
I feel much better!
I have been noticing that I am tired every day, no matter how long I sleep. I’ll sleep for 12 hours, but I’ll still feel fatigued during the day. In the morning my nose will be a little stuffy, and my lungs will hurt. The lungs hurting goes away after I’ve been up for a few hours, and the nose gets better and/or unnoticeable as well. I don’t smoke regularly (I’ll smoke once every couple weeks or so at the pub,). What’s going on with me? It’s been going on for a while, I just didn’t really notice it because it was so gradually, and the symptoms aren’t hugely life-interference. Is this allergies? Sleep apnea? Lung cancer? What’s going on!!
The pain is mild, and only in the morning; more of an ache, really. Sometimes a bit of a cough accompanies it, and it is with a stuffy nose and scratchy eyes. Obviously I need to have a doctor check, but that answer isn’t very helpful.
Again, I’m American: we don’t get to just "go to the doctor" unless we want to be "going to the bank" for a very long time. I’m wondering if anyone has an educated diagnosis based on my symptoms alone. Obviously a trip to the doctor would be important, but if that was something I could easily do, I would have.
Ear nose and throat? Is there another name for ear nose and throat doctor? They don’t have any listed under my insurance plan.
The GP refuses to give us an appointment. She said it sounds like nothing by my description. I’d like to punch her in the face. I’m gonna go to straight to the specialist. Otolaryngologists is on the list, thanks.
No I don’t know if it’s apnea or not. I’m guessing based on what I have read. It also could be asthma. Because the GP is not helping me figure it out, I’m going straight to the specialist.
I brought him to my chiropractor 2 days ago, and he said it’s just really bad sinuses and allergies. He gave him an adjustment and he’s already breathing better. So far he has done last night, through the night without trouble (I stayed awake watching him) and today’s nap and so far tonight, he’s been breathing.
Thanks to everyone for the help and advice. If it happens again, I’ll talk to an ENT, but so far, it’s looking good. I did make an appointment with the allergist to check on it.
I have a cipap machine for my sleep apnea and I also had a nasal mask for it. When I got it I forgot to mention that I had allergies and its causing me to breathe out of my mouth. What should I do about this? There a cheaper way of fixing this, because a full face mask would cost me 300 dollers.
I tried using it the other day and I couldn’t because it was hard to breathe and was losing lot of the pressure, because I couldn’t breathe out from my nose.
The other thing I noticed was my cipap machine has a humidifier and when its activiated its even harder to breathe cause it does trigger my allergies and makes my nose very congested. What do I do about that?
I sleep 7-8 hours wake up zombified with eye bags. When i lay down or relax one of my nasal passages gets congested or constricted. Doctor said it was allergies prescribed nasonex. Used it made breathing worse (dry nose, even more constricted even when not laying down or relaxing). Also when one passage is congested and i turn my head to other side, the congestion moves to that side.
I am 19yrs old, not overweight (128 pounds), have a good high protein diet because i work out. Could this be sleep apnea? Or is this the way allergies work, only effecting breathing when laying down? Had this since early childhood, and get strep throat every winter. These are all my symptoms, thanks if anyone can help or link symptoms.
I am getting my soft palate reduction, adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy at the same time.
I have a couple of questions, i would rather have the general public address than the doctor. Because all the doctor can give me is statistics and ‘rare’ occassions.
Is bleeding of the throat prevalent after the surgery?
I heard i would not get my original voice back after the surgery, how true is this?
Would i lose weight, after the surgery?
How long would i have to go without solid food?
Should spicy food be avoided at all costs, after the surgery?
Would i be more prone to infections and allergies after the surgery?
I’m having this surgery because i have OSA – Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
Occasionally I wake up to my husband making very strange, terrifying noises. I wouldn’t say they were wheezing sounds, but when he breathes in its loud and sounds painful. The first time I heard it I thought it was a cat or a baby crying. I wake him up every time, and he just apologizes and goes back to sleep. He isn’t short of breath, and doesn’t seem to really have any symptoms of Sleep Apnea. What could it be? (He doesn’t have asthma, but he does get allergies sometimes).
My husband’s doctor ordered sleep study for him. We already know he has sleep apnea because I’m an insomniac and can lie there watching him stop breathing over and over again. He thinks it’s a waste of time to have the study done when he already knows he has the apnea; and he says the machine to treat the apnea will be too expensive, too bulky, and we can’t afford it. Anyway, what else can they find during a sleep study that he might need to know about? And does the machine really work? How are sleep apnea sufferers doing after having the treatment? Any other suggestions? He already knows he has to lose weight and improve some other health problems. Alcohol consumption seems to contribute to the apnea, though not EVERY time he drinks (more when he drinks too much or drinks beer), and allergies contribute (from what I can observe).
I’m looking for potential ways to help relieve asthma. I’m 23 years old, and was diagnosed as asthmatic when i was 8. It’s always been quite severe, i currently need to use 500 mg Seretide (purple inhaler) morning and night, and the Salamol (blue inhaler) whenever i need it, which is frequently. I’m also put onto various steroid courses a year and have been hospitalized multiple times.
Recently however my asthma has been getting worse still. I’m beginning to have attacks for the minimal of exertion, such as going shopping, or even going to the toilet at times, and earlier on today I was taken to the hospital after a particularly severe attack caused by the extremely strenuous activity of watching TV.
I’ve been to the doctor about it, but they refuse to give me anything stronger. I was told that it’s my own fault because I’m overweight and that I need to exercise, and while this is true (my BMI is 27), I really don’t think its a valid answer. I mean, 27 isn’t severely overweight, and how exactly is more exercise the solution if walking to the bathroom is causing me to keel over?
I need any possible solutions that may help me to quench this a bit. It’s not being caused by allergies, and I already use a CPAP mask at night (for sleep apnea). I just need the ability to breathe. Simple as that.
I've had treatments for depression for about 3 years now. None of the depression treatments such as medication and ECT helped.
I recently suspected sleep apnea and went for an overnight sleep study. They confirmed that I was experiencing sleep apnea, and I had a partial night's rest using the CPAP machine at the testing location, but it wasn't a full night's rest using it.
The test was last weekend, and they said it would be 7-10 days for a doctor to analyze the data and get back to me. I won't know how severe my sleep apnea is until I hear from the doc…
I was wondering if anyone would like to share their sleep apnea problems and solutions, and how well they did (or didn't) work. I'm especially interested in anyone's story involving depression, either due to or made worse by sleep apnea.
I'm not terribly overweight, 6ft 1in and 220 lbs, but the doc said I have a very narrow throat, and my severe allergies and sinus problems play a role.
I appreciate anyone's storys!
