Sleep Apnea?????
With not being able to sleep soundly through the night for some time, I’m thinking I might have sleep apnea. I understand there are tests for such conditions and an air mask that one can wear at night to improve breathing.
Now, I’ve seen pictures of such masks and these do not look at all comfortable … you’ve got a band that clamps around your forehead and a cover for your nose with an attached vaccum-type hose.
Has anybody either worn one of these contraptions or known someone who has? Are they custom-fitted? Does one get used to such a mask quickly? Does the accompanying air pump rattle and shake during operation and keep you awake?
Thanx …

One of the columnists for the local paper said he got a CPAP machine. He said you do get used to it.
First you will have to go for a sleep study. They hook you all up like Alex in "Clockwork Orange" then you are supposed to sleep. You are on camera all night. They track any leg movement (restless leg syndrome), put electrodes all over your head and body, and two little things like toothpicks under your nostrils to measure oxygen intake. (You do get a smal tablet of Ambien to help you sleep with all that gear on). They count how many times you stop breathing. I only stopped 27 times and they said the minimum for treatment must be 30. So I didn’t qualify. Then I wasn’t sure if I wanted to have to try and sleep with that CPAP thing anyway.
If you are overweight, try losing weight. Also, refrain from alcohol since it relaxes the muscles in your throat, which collapse and cause the apnea. There are plenty of sites
Yes, my dad and brothers use them. They are kind of expensive, but cheaper than surgery. They say at first its weird then you get used to it so i would look in to them.
GOOD LUCK!!
My husband was tested with a home kit which was returned for analysis. He has sleep apnea, and he uses the CPAP machine. The mask does take a bit of getting used to (we kiss goodnight before he puts it on.. haha) but it does improve the night’s sleep, and makes it more restful.
The pump is all but silent.. Good luck
My mom & dad have mask..sleep apnea needs to be treated you can stop breathing several time during the night with this..Your machine will be called a c pack..It will take you time to get use to it but you will rest better..Good luck
Yes I wear one I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea for about a year and a half now… the mask is cumberson but you will be supprised how quickly you can get use to it and the pump is mostly silent and once you get the rythym of the breathing it becomes even quieter
I would recommend seeing a chiropractor. My son had sleep apnea since birth and it always scared me my doctor said that is just how he was made and there was nothing we could do about it. I took him to a chiro when he was 2 and after xrays he got his first adjustment That night he slept so quietly and peaceful I couldnt sleep because I couldn’t hear him. I would recommend seeing a chiropractor first and see if that helps. Good Luck
Take these quizzes and if you score 9 or more, take the results to your doctor.
Sleep apnea can interrupt sleep. A good nights sleep will reduce his chances of a heart attack, it could bring down your blood pressure. It will leave you feeling rested and awake during the day with more energy. Here are the links.
