Sleep Apnea?
What is sleep apnea? I am fourteen and am overweight. I sleep for 8 hours eveyday, but I’m always tired. I have frequent headaches and seem to be fatigued no matter how much I sleep. My family has a history of diabetes. My uncle sleeps a lot, but he stays awake for days at a time. Could diabetes cause this as well (I didn’t have it last time I went to my doc).

The most common symptoms of sleep apnea that you may notice include:
-Excessive daytime sleepiness, which is falling asleep when you normally should not, such as while you are eating, talking, or driving.
-Waking with an unrefreshed feeling after sleep, having problems with memory and concentration, feeling tired, and experiencing personality changes.
-Morning or night headaches. About half of all people with sleep apnea report headaches.
-Heartburn or a sour taste in the mouth at night.
-Swelling of the legs if you are obese.
-Getting up during the night to urinate (nocturia).
-Sweating and chest pain while you are sleeping.
Symptoms of sleep apnea that others may notice include:
-Episodes of not breathing (apnea), which may occur as few as 5 times an hour (mild apnea) to more than 50 times an hour (severe apnea). How many episodes you have determines how severe your sleep apnea is.
-Loud snoring. Almost all people who have sleep apnea snore, but not all people who snore have sleep apnea.
-Restless tossing and turning during sleep.
-Nighttime choking or gasping spells.
sleep apnea i believe is when you stop breathing while you sleep.
my husband has sleep apnea, usually it occurs to people who are over weight but not limited to.
from what i know its when you sleep and you snore, the oxygen to your brain is limited, therefore you will feel tired when you wake up. Also in the long run it may cause Alzheimer’s.
also you stop breathing a few times during the night
you should see a ear, nose, throat specialist
my husband has to sleep with a special mask on his face that is attached to a machine
he said it has helped him and he doesn’t feel as tired anymore
The most common kind of sleep apnea is basically a condition in which part of your soft palate can obstruct your breathing during the night and cause your body to wake up periodically. If you have that, you probably snore fairly loudly, so maybe your family members can help determine whether you have it.
Diabetes can cause tiredness, but there are lots of other things that can too, so if you don’t have other symptoms (frequent urination, excessive thirst, etc.), I wouldn’t worry about it. I haven’t heard of diabetes causing headaches, either.
You might want to talk to your doctor. Headache+fatigue could mean a lot of things, and if it’s serious enough to be bugging you, your doctor might have some idea of what’s causing it.
You dont have sleep apnea. I am a nursing student and you get sleep apnea when you wake up in the middle of the night grasping for air.
Sleep Apnea is a interruption in your breathing during your sleep at night. Sometime several interruptions or in the case of a client I have at present 14 interruptions nightly. There is a overnight sleep test given to find out if someone has Sleep Apnea and a machine called a C-Pap, or Bi-Pap that is used in patient who have Sleep Apnea, The C-Pap is used to aid the patient went they have an interruption by bursting a breath, (as you will), of air into the mouth of the patient when it detects an interruption in their breathing pushing air into the lungs for them, essentially taking the breath for them. Consult your Doctor with your fears and he will be able to guide you in the right direction for having the test to see if you truly do have Sleep Apnea..Druski337
You need to have a "sleep study" to tell if you have sleep apnea. It sounds like a possibility — talk to your Doctor!
