Question about sleep apnea?
I am a freshmen in college and share a dorm room and I think my roommate might have sleep apnea. First of all he snores loud. Secondly, he falls asleep very quickly, I think I read somewhere that this was a symptom but I’m not sure. He also has very strange sleeping habits. Sometimes he will go to bed at 9:00 at night and other times he will not go to sleep until 3:00 in the morning. The same goes with waking up. Some days he will wake up at 4:30 in the morning and some days he wont wake up until after lunchtime. He also seems to take lots of naps.
When he is snoring, sometimes he makes odd noises like he is chocking on something. He is also Hispanic and overweight but I’m not sure if this has anything to do with sleep apnea.
I can’t really hear his breathing exactly because I sleep with earplugs in to drown out the snoring so I can’t tell if he stops breathing in the middle of the night but Im pretty sure the choking noises (occurring 1-2 times per night) is a symptom. Do you think he has sleep apnea?

First of all, I am NOT a doctor. I will make some suggestions here. My son is obese and is very active as a college professor and in community affairs. He snores on a big time basis. I thought that this was a bit intense. I have been so concerned. Then he and I went to the hospital together. The hospital personnel arranged for him to be tested for sleep apnea. He had the ‘worst’ level of sleep apnea that the hospital had experienced to that point. I was SO GLAD that he was appropriately diagnosed. The doctors kept my son there through the night. They suggested that he would be monitored regularly through doctor’s visits within their clinic. Also, they ordered an immediate dispension of a C-Pap machine. This way, he would not snore and would breath normally. Also, everytime my son had to go into the hospital for his regular visit, he would take a digitalized card from within the machine. The specialists at the hospital would then read about my son’s breathing patterns, and keep a record of his progress. They could also check on the proper maintenance of this machine. Snoring can be very SERIOUS. Tell your roommate about this so that all will be well. I wish you both continued success. Peace!
It is possible. The choking sounds are classic for obstructive sleep apnea and it is more common in obese patients. You may want to bring it up with him, let him know you are concerned and suggest he see a doctor.
you said he was over wt that is one of the things excessive fatigue snoring gagging choking all prevent him from getting a good nights rest he should see an ENT maybe his tonsils are enlarged or his adnoids need to be removed, either way the ENT can send him to the sleep clinic , my BF has a CPAP machine he did that alot he would be mean and nasty and irritable with a bad night
