Other than sleep apnea, what might cause someone to feel tired all the time, like they have had zero sleep?
I am a female in my late 30s, slightly overweight but not obese (5’5, 148 pounds). Recent sleep test showed NO sleep apnea but did show that I woke up 30+ times (without knowing it) (even after having taken a sleep aid). Only stay in REM for 7 minutes.
Any thoughts? Doctor suggested sleeping pills but that obviously didn’t work even during the sleep test. It’s gotten worse – I think I’m sleeping through the night but wake up exhausted.

There are so many things that can cause sleep problems. Stress is a major cause. If all your tests, blood work etc have come back negative, it could be stress. My doctor gave me Mertazapine. It worked fine, but I was afraid of the side effects and possible dependency so I looked for alternatives. What I found was two natural sleep aids. Type in the names of these to any search engine to find out how they work. Melatonin and Valerian Root are both totally drug free and natural herbs. I take two of each about 30 min before bedtime and go to sleep within seconds of touching the pillow. One by itself may work for you or you may need to experiment to find a good combination that works best. I rest well thru the night and wake up ready to go. The only drawback is the Valerian Root. It has a very pungent smell/taste, very similar to soured milk, but it works so well that I just ignore the smell/taste. They are both available at drug and health stores, but walmart is cheapest. Sweet dreams.
restless leg syndrome maybe
Maybe it is stress. Do you have alot of stress in your life?
It is quite possible that you have deveoped diabetes. Constant fatigue is one of the warning signs. Have your blood glucose tested, or just buy urine strips at the pharmacy and see if there is glucose in your urine.
How is your blood sugar level? Stress?
I assume they tested your thyroid? Check for diabetes? I’m wondering if your blood sugar is falling during the night. Sometimes when that happens, you can wake up with an anxious feeling. You might want to try eating some peanut butter on a couple crackers or on celery 30 minutes or so before bedtime, or drinking a glass of 1% milk at that time.
Interesting dilemma; I’d like to know the outcome.
Do you have a lot of stress?
could be your weight too….even though your not that overweight. Try working out 5 days a week for 45 miutes. Maybe you need a vacation….away from things where you live.
Anemia, Iron deficiency.
how do you know you are in REM for 7 minutes?
sounds like maybe you are keeping yourself awake doing elaborate sleep testing experiments
ok, somebody else did the testing
maybe you are worrying, figure out EXACTLY what things are bothering you, then fix that
also get massages, exercise, good food
a better sleep aid maybe
good sex maybe (that helps me)
and you are NOT overweight
it is common for women to wake repeatedly and not remember. Check your diet and cut back on caffeine and sugars, and carbs. Start walking in the morning or afternoon and try to meditate. That has helped me. But again i have a two month old so i don’t sleep good either. Explore your dreams to. May be having a nightmare that is waking you but don’t remember it. Keep a journal and write down what you eat, what you did, and who you talked to that day then keep another journal for sleep to see what may be triggering it.
hepatitis c-a liver disease. sounds impossible? not really….if you’ve ever seen a dentist, had your nails done, ever experimentd with drugs, have a tattoo or piercing, you could be infected.
alt and ast levels are not always elevated in a liver panel test. you should be tested for antibodies for hcv and go from there!
