I’m so angry at my baby’s doctors!?
Tell me what you would do or if you have had a similar experience. My baby has constantly been sick since Nov. with 2 bouts of RSV and continuous respiratory infections. He also has had a terrible wet cough nonstop. I’ve been to doctor after doctor. One doctor gave us a nebulizer, Singulair and suggested he had asthma or allergies but insisted the sicknesses were all viral and prescribed no antibiotic. I asked the the emergency room doctor (when he had RSV) why he was constantly getting sick and about his cough and he said he was just there to stabilize treatment and that I could drive 3 hours to the next town to consult an allergy specialist. He also called a few days later to say that the xray could POSSIBLY suggest pneumonia but couldn’t be sure and still no antibiotics. I went to another doctor and he said it was all viral respiratory infections because my son goes to daycare and that I"ll be thankful he’s building his immunity now. (I paid 0 for that great advice) Finally I just knew I had to keep trying and the doctor I went to today immediately said he had a sinus infection and prescribed antibiotics and is referring me to an ear, throat, and nose specialist to be evaulated for sleep apnea or infected tonsils since he hasn’t been wanting to eat. It makes me so angry at the other doctors for causing my son to suffer so long. They just seemed to shrug their shoulders and say there was nothing they could do. I even found on the internet that all his symptoms matched sinusitus and bronchitis but these doctors are such idiots they couldn’t figure it out! They just chalked it up to daycare and allergies. So I think when we go to this specialist I will have them fax all his results to these idiots so maybe they can learn from their mistakes. Is there some rule now that doctors don’t prescribe antibiotics anymore?! Just listening to me son breathe I could hear the rattle in his chest and his swollen sinuses. They just acted like oh well, he’s playing so he’s fine. What else is he supposed to do, be on his deathbed in order to get help? He’s just making the best of it even though he has been feeling very badly.

sorry for your pain and your son’s . i know you must be livid. i guess just be thankfull you know which docs not to go to and that you have a happy baby who can make the best of things. hope he feels better soon. happy mother’s day
well honestly, dr’s dont prescribe antibiotics for babies because it causes other problems such as thrush and well other problems and if the baby has got bronchitis or asthma antibiotics wont help, i would say the nebulizer would be best if it was asthma or something close to the sort. Antibiotics are for infection and thats not. Anyways hopefully it all gets sorted with the ENT, all the best
That has to be frustrating. I don’t know if there is much you can do besides refer other people that you to the doctor that didn’t have his or her head in the sand (or somewhere else for that matter). It seems like the fact that he wasn’t getting any better should have been a huge clue. Doctors don’t prescribe antibiotics the way they used to because of the possibility of the "bugs" developing a tolerance for the drug, thus rendering it not as effective if effective at all. However you’d think that after months of being sick that someone would have tried something at some point. I’m glad that you at least found someone that got something done for you.
sorry you had such an ordeal; there’s no rule about antibiotics, but bc of the resistant strains of bacteria now, they are much more hesitant to give them out…mrsa, vre, etc…
Forget anybody but a specialist, and seek several. An ENT, pulmonologist, allergist, and infectious disease to start with.
consider probiotics like transfer factor
be sure to have him immunoglobulin levels checked (infectious disease will do this)
I feel a nebulizer is a good idea
I know exactly how you feel. My daughter was sick for months (she’s 10 months now). I had her to the doctor about every week for 2 months. She had 2 ear infections, sinus infection, a number of viruses and possible RSV. She was put on several rounds of antibiotics. And also put on singulair. Her doctor had left the office to move out of country so we went with another pediatrician in the office. He seen her for her 9 month check up. He referred her to an ENT and said if things didn’t get better by this month, they were going to run a series of test. She is well now, thank God! But we go to the ENT Wednesday. I wish you luck with the specialist.
BTW…my daughter is breastfed…and I thought it was suppose to help keep her from getting sick. I guess not all kids. I guess it could be worse if she weren’t.
