I have Sleep Apena and use a CPAP. No offense taken. I understand your fears. I had them as well.
I can tell you that the sleep study is no big deal. A technician will place several electrodes on you, a band around your abdomon, a sensor at your nose and mouth, and an oxygen monitor on your finger. These will monitor your breathing, oxygen levels, stages of sleep, heart rate, and various muscle movements while you sleep. None of it is painful or uncomfortable. The room will be very much like a hotel room. There is really no reason to stress over it.
If this study finds that you do have Sleep Apnea a second study will be necessary to determine the correct settings for a CPAP machine.
Since you are male and overweight you are at an increased risk for SA.
You are correct about the CPAP not being very sexy. But any woman worth your time should understand how important it is for your health and life. SA carries a risk of stroke or death.

Relax, if you’re not waking up short of breath, then I wouldn’t get overly concerned. Also, even if you do need a CPAP, keep in mind that most people only use it when sleeping, not while they are awake. Therefore, you should still be able to continue doing the things you enjoy. Go ahead and have the study done because it is better to find out now, rather than wait until you do actually need a CPAP and have it be too late to get one. Besides you mentioned that your doctor was wrong once before, try convincing yourself that you are going to prove her wrong again. Hope this is somewhat helpful. Sweet Dreams.
Don’t be afraid of your appointment, or of using a C-Pap, but do so only under a doctor’s care. This breathing situation (whether it’s apnea or not) can be controlled, and you will be able to enjoy camping. You’re doing the right thing by seeing the doctor. You’ll be fine, now quit worrying and enjoy your life, my friend!
A CPAP is a lot sexier than a coffin. My advice would be get over your vanity and don’t worry about the test. If it comes back negative, then you have lost nothing by time. If it comes back positive, then you fix your problem.
The only way its going to kill you is if you don’t take the test, you do have apnea, and leave it go untreated. CPAPs are annoying, but they are small and portable and come with a travel bag. If you do need one, I personally recommend the full face mask over the other ones. More comfortable. If your worried about camping, buy a portable generator.
As for your symptoms, it may not be that they just appeared after it was mentioned, but rather you or others may have been more aware of them since.
Whether your awake or not early in the day is not a significant factor in determining sleep apnea as quality of sleep is.
Excessive sleepiness, morning headaches, increased heart rate, decreased sex drive, anxiety, restlessness, heavy sweating at night, snoring (with periods of silence followed by gasps), increased frequency of urination, and so on are signs/symptoms of sleep apnea.
