I can’t sleep because I wake up with what seems like chest congestion. What’s wrong?
For the past few days, I haven’t been able to get much sleep because I wake up wheezing and gasping for air. It feels like my air passage has closed, and it normally takes an hour or so to get my breathing pattern back to normal. During the day, I don’t have any difficulties and I don’t appear to be ill. I’ve looked up sleep apnea, but I don’t have the symptoms… I don’t suffer from heartburn (well I have random chest pains, but never after eating), sore throat or nausea so I don’t think it’s gastroesophageal reflux (GER), although it does seem like it happens when I’m lying down. I’ve tried the Vicks rub but it doesn’t have any effect. I haven’t done anything odd recently, rather than watch Avatar the night before the symptoms started. Was the movie so good that it left me a breathless insomniac (haha joking) or could it still possibly be GER or is it something else? What can I do to stop it?

If you dont have any respiratory congestion during the day and haven’t in the recent past, it could be mold in the ventilation system or room (check houseplants, ac filter, walls being wet, etc). It could be that the way that you are laying is compressing your lungs or airway so that you aren’t getting normal breaths while sleeping.
Sounds like you may have asthma, you need to go to the doctor. Asthma is just an allergy in your lungs. Something in your house may be irritating your lungs, you should dust in the area you sleep.
I had someting very similar to this. That after a while, it seemed to get a bit worse and I thought best to get checked.
I think I have narrowed mine down to coffee!!
I am a coffee drinker and like strong coffee. I buy whatever good deal the supermarket has on the "better brands" So I think there is a specific rich coffee that brings this on in me.
Could it be something like this.
As I say I drink far too much coffee, so it’s not the fact that you may "do" something all the time, it can just be a brand or an ingredient that doesn’t agree with you.
But it can be very frustrating and worrying to feel like you cant breathe. I felt like my breath wasn’t getting in any further than my chest
