can’t sleep–any advice?
My husband has a lot of trouble sleeping, and nothing we try helps him. He has to get up at 5am, and he tries to go to bed early. But if he sleeps early, he falls asleep for a short time, then wakes up and can’t go back to sleep for the rest of the night. And he keeps waking up in the middle of the night and often he can’t go back to sleep then, either.
He has tried three different medications: Ambien, Lunesta, and Rosarum, and none have helped. He has sleep apnea and has tried using a c-pap machine, and couldn’t tolerate it.
He has lowered his caffeine intake, but can’t eliminate it completely because he can’t wake up otherwise (waking up at 5am every day and not ever getting enough sleep).
Can anyone give us some advice on how he can get enough sleep?

Talk to your doctor.
Also he might be sensitive to caffeine. Instead of drinking coffee maybe he can drink a caffeinated soda instead.
It also might be that your mattress is too uncomfortable.
tequila
- Set a good, steady routine for going to bed (example: watch tv for a while, then read, then lights out)
- Don’t eat right before you plan to go to sleep
- A warm, milky drink (warm milk is the best, probably) will help you feel relaxed and sleepy
- Have the radio on in the background, as this can help relax some people
how old is he?
does he have any stress about work, family?
does he do any sport?
Try go running before he sleeps.
stress is a good reason why most people can’t sleep.
I have this exact same problem…and I too have to wake up at 5am. What you should get him to do is take a tylenol pm an hour before bedtime. This will make him get a good nights rest. It is safe, as my doctor has told me to do this.
Try a sinus medication or those nose strips that clear your nose. Also tell him that he should lose 10% of his body weight, it can really help.
Talk to a doctor. If you have kids tell them to please don’t stress your husband out or maybe your husband has problems…? Hope that helps.
I have known people with similar problems and they have tried things such as drinking a glass of wine to help soothe them to sleep or exercising then taking a hot shower before they go to bed
This has happened to me before, Some things to do when you cannot sleep are:
1. Play a CD while your Husband is trying to go to sleep, No Rock&Roll or any type of Music like that. Play a CD, or go on YouTube and put on Ocean Waves. If you want to try YouTube, Search Smooth Music or Ocean Sounds.
2. Take him to a Spa, The Professionals over there will give him a "Hot Rock Massage" that will surely put him to sleep!
3. Yes, Lower his Caffine or get rid of it! Caffine is good sometimes, Not everyday. That can be a very good reason, Why he is not having a good night.

That happens to me too. Tequila actually does help, lol. But another thing to consider is that his sleep schedule may be really off scedule, and his body is confused. I can stay up for days (without drugs) and feel fine. Or i sleep for days at a time. My sleep scedule is really messed up, so it’s hard to stay awake or sleep when i need too. What I would suggest is these three things:
1)Go to sleep, or at least lie in bed at the exact same time every day, and wake up at the exact same time everyday. Doing this will force your brain to associate that time with rest & sleep, so once it gets used to that it will be easier to drift off. It may take a while and be frustrating just laying there staying awake, but it’s what needs to be done.
2)Umm this may not be a good suggestion, so if it offends you I’m sorry: Smoke pot or get drunk. It helps me alot to just have a bowl 2 hours before i want to go to sleep, and i get so tired that i can’t keep my eyes open. Same with drinking, just make sure it’s malt. Again, i don’t know if your against that or anything, but this would be for sleeping purposes so maybe it’s acceptable, eh? lol.
3)Take one half or one more of the sleep pills. I know it’s not directed, but your not gonna overdose unless you take at least 5. Your husband just may need that extra little dose to get him tired, i know i do. Regular sleeping pills don’t do anything for me unless i take like four! Also, I’m not really familiar with sleep medication, but maybe there’s something stronger that a doctor could prescribe. This really is insomnia, a medical issue. So I would go to the doctor anyways about it, and they could see if it’s just insomnia or something else.
Sorry for the long ass answer, I just know how it feels and want to help :)
Try getting him to work out / exercise before bed.
Working to the point of muscle exhaustion gives your body a reason to rest / recharge. A lot of people sit in a chair all day, then wonder why they can’t sleep at night. Well there’s your answer.
Make sure he takes a shower after his workout though! ;)
He’ll feel refreshed, and sleep like a log. At least those were my results.
Good luck.
